On 20 November 2008, CoST was formally launched in Tanzania in a ceremony attended by Hon. Sophia M. Simba (MP), the Minister of State responsible for Good Governance. The launch was held in Dar es Salaam and ushered in the national multi-stakeholder group.

In the interests of cross learning, the international secretariat held a meeting with representatives of its sister secretariats for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and the Medicines Transparency Alliance (MeTA). The purpose of the meeting was to identify areas that are common to all three initiatives and where similar challenges exist in their implementation.

Following the recent appointment of Christiaan Poortman from Transparency International as Chair of the IAG, the first IAG meeting will be held in Manila on 29 and 30 January 2009. The meeting will bring together all IAG members from the pilot countries, DFID and the World Bank. The IAG Chair will visit Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia in early December in order to meet with CoST stakeholders ahead of the IAG meeting.

This report summarises the discussions that took place at the official launch of CoST's pilot phase in Dar es Salaam, in May 2008.

The official launch of the pilot phase of the Construction Sector Transparency Initiative (CoST) took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 22 and 23 May 2008.

We are pleased to announce that CoST will be launched formally in Tanzania on 22/23 May 2008.
